These B.C. chefs are hoping to cook up success on Top Chef Canada

Three B.C. chefs will be facing off against other top Canadian culinary talent when the Food Network Top Chef Canada cooking competition show returns Oct. 14 at 10 p.m.

Back for the 11th season, the cooking competition will see Lisa Ahier of Tofino, Haan Palcu-Chang of Salt Spring Island, and Chanthy Yen of Vancouver.

Throughout the season of Top Chef Canada, the chefs will be put to the test, facing off in challenges where they must put their best plate forward — or be sent packing.

According to the network, this season “pays homage to Canada’s diverse heritage and culinary scene, including an epic finale in Montreal.”

Top Chef Canada welcomes back chef, cookbook author, and longtime series host, Eden Grinshpan, along with returning judges: Chef, fermenter and author David Zilber, restaurateur Janet Zuccarini, chef and owner of The McEwan Group, Mark McEwan, along with content creator and Vancouver food expert Mijune Pak.

Lisa Ahier: The 63-year-old chef joins the show as the “godmother” of the modern Tofino culinary scene. With over three decades of experience, Ahler was the chef and co-owner of Tofino’s award-winning Sobo Restaurant, which began as a food truck more than 20 years ago.

Ahler has penned two bestselling cookbooks and helped create the Tofino Ucluelet Culinary Guild (TUCG), a non-profit that connects local restaurants, families and grocery stores with Vancouver Island and regional independent farmers and producers.

Haan Palcu-Chang: After working at prestigious restaurants in Denmark, France, Singapore, China and Canada, this Michelin-star trained, 39-year-old chef shifted gears during the pandemic to prioritize supporting his growing family.

When he isn’t working in financial marketing, Palcu-Chang moonlights as the chef and owner of Mama Flo’s, a boutique event, catering, and restaurant consulting company in Toronto.

Chanthy Yen: Yen’s life changed in 2021 when the 35-year-old made history as the first Queer and BIPOC chef to become the personal chef to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his family.

Chanthy has worked in Michelin-starred restaurants in San Sebastian and Barcelona, Spain, but is now showing off his cooking talents as the Chef de Cuisine at the Michelin-recommended Bacaro in Vancouver. He has a cookbook that highlights his Cambodian heritage set for release in 2025.
